DESTROYA
Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys - My Chemical Romance
"You don't believe in God, I don't believe in luck
They don't believe in us, but I believe we're the enemy!
Destroya, Destroya, Destroya, Destroya!"
I know this song has its own story in relation to the album and to me this song illustrates several romantic dynamics that I relate to.
It presents a large “us versus them” mentality. I found myself fighting for this mentality in a past unhealthy relationship, so sure that we were healthy, and we were going to make it despite all odds, despite our differences and despite the world being against us because it was love, and that is what you do for love. “You don't believe in God, I don't believe in luck. They don't believe in us, but I believe we're the enemy!” Being ridiculed, “They laugh, we don't think it's funny” and finding ways to make this work while actively being separated by an outside party, “What have you become, when they take from you almost everything?” Being thirteen this, of course, only strengthened our resolve to prove we were going to ‘make it and get out of this place’ and us fighting so hard against the world, ruining other relationships to be ‘right’ “destroya…” Oblivious to the pitfalls in our relationship and how much I was being hurt in the process.
I also feel that these same quotes highlight what it is like to be in an unhealthy queer relationship, the kind where you drop holding hands the second you take a step into public or having your partner hide your relationship around certain people out of embarrassment, only displaying affection privately and snubbing you in person. All while you find ways and reasons to justify these actions and hurt/ignore other relationships to keep things going with this person.
Although now, writing this in October 2025, in the United States, I also view it as the reality of being in a queer relationship during this time. “I believe we’re the enemy” is sometimes all you can believe when everything is going on. You have no choice to drop hands in public places and not because you're embarrassed, but because you are worried for you and your partner’s safety you feel as if your future and chance to have a public relationship is being destroyed as other queer people are being ridiculed, hurt and killed over being queer. This is something I obliviously never considered in the past, that I would ever have to do this, hide who I am for my own safety and while some people may call me soft and entitled, I view it as a privilege that I could ever have thought this way and that I hope I can think this way again. Signs of progress are taking things for “granted” because some things shouldn't be a privilege, just a right like being with who you want.
